Remember Thou Art Mortal The Chronicles of a Mending Heart Every event in life - good or not - changes the course of our lives in some way. For Atul Uchil it was as big an event in life as one could experience without ending life itself a heart attack. Some 600,000 Americans experience a heart attack each year, but not everyone who survives uses the experience to change their lives and the lives of others. Dr. Uchil tackles the struggles to fight back from a heart attack with Remember Thou Art Mortal The Chronicles of a Mending Heart. Dr. Uchil tells a very personal account of a post-heart-attack life in a surprisingly warm and candid book that also happens to be preciously informative. Far from a dry, medical tome, Remember Thou Art Mortal intersperses Dr. Uchil's narrative with useful breakdowns of medical terminology, his first-person description of heart attack symptoms, and advice on dietary changes that could help prevent heart attack and much more.

This is an outstanding story of a very personal event. Dr. Uchil shares his experience with us in hopes that all of us pursuing careers will reflect for a while on how well we are listening to, and taking care of, our bodies. Many of us ignore the often subtle messages that our body sends us because we are so wrapped up in our workaday world. We dismiss pain and put off seeking medical care because we have so much that we need to accomplish for the job, and anyhow, it's probably just one of those things (indigestion, a pulled muscle, lack of sleep, or any number of excuses) that will go away if we just stay strong and ignore it. This kind of drive almost cost Dr. Uchil his life. I have read all of Dr. Uchil's books, and this one could be a Part 2 to his early book, I Opted Out, what I consider a story of redemption. These books are about second chances, something that everyone doesn't get. I recommend this book to everyone who works hard for a living: take a lesson from Dr. Uchil's harrowing experience before it's too late.

Remember Thou Art Mortal The Chronicles of a Mending Heart Atul Uchil Phd 9781478715887 Books Reviews

I recommend this book to anyone who either has or knows someone who has heart health issues. It provides insight to what the person maybe feeling or experiencing and some ways in which to find or provide support.

I also recommend this book to anyone who has had a traumatic life changing event. The lesson here is easily relatable. Having had such an event, I found myself feeling empathetic to the author. Realizing that I wasn't the only one who has ever felt that way..
As the editor for the book, I was skeptical at first of the topic. Usually it's a dry subject that doesn't really engage the audience, but this was a completely different experience. It reads like a story and pulls the listener in. I say listener because Dr. Uchil uses a conversational tone that makes you feel like he's sitting in front of you, giving you the play-by-play of what he went through. He has a knack for making the information relevant to your life - whether you're a heart attack survivor, a friend or family member of a survivor, or you just want to be inspired by someone who overcame a life-altering challenge with a great attitude and optimistic perspective.
As a personal friend and professional colleague, I was well aware of Dr. Uchil's critical medical event. I feared that my friend would be lost or at best diminished by his heart attack.

This book shares with all of us a most valuable transformative lesson on how we as individuals facing catastrophic events can repurpose these losses into wisdom and acceptance. Dr. Uchil guides the reader to a greater understanding of what is truly important and valuable in this short journey we call life.
This book represents one of the deeper more personal writings of Dr. Atul Uchil, a good friend and an exceptional colleague. This book reminds me of a hymn I once heard

God hath not promised skies always blue,
Flower-strewn pathways all our lives through;
God hath not promised sun without rain,
Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.
But God hath promised strength for the day,
Rest for the labor, light for the way,
Grace for the trials, help from above,
Unfailing sympathy, undying love.

Atul has lived through personal and professional challenges, family health crisis, 9/11, ... and through these experiences he has grown more human, more loving, and more powerful. This book will inspire you.
While Dr. Uchil's description of his cardiac "event" was powerful and chilling, his journey through the stages of recovery were equally powerful and motivating. His personal narrative of the effects on his wife, Patricia, and his children remind me that we journey together. Consideration for those closest to the patient is important for the survival and recovery of the family. Well done!
Dr. Uchil (not an MD as he reminds us throughout the book) has written his most personal book to date. In Remember Thou Art Mortal, Dr. Uchil provides not only a great deal of information on what happens once you've had a cardiac event, but also the very personal story of of his recovery. As the story develops it is very obvious that having an optimistic outlook, the will to do what is needed, a strong support system and some good luck can sometimes be the difference between life and death. I fully expect that this book will save some lives, if people will heed the advice it contains. Because Dr. Uchil survived his heart attack and was able to write this book maybe some of us won't have our own "Initial Event".
This book is stunningly insightful without ever pulling out a soap box to lecture from. While it may be most useful for members of the Immortality Club who have to come to grips with their aging bodies, it also provides a basis for their supporters to understand what they are going through.
You may pick up this book expecting to read a little at a time, but that is virtually impossible. You will have to read it straight through, so plan accordingly. I highly recommend this one!
