This is one of the finest books that I have read in years. The depth of thought and biblical understanding is expressed with stunning precision and clarity. The author's earnestness in this work is remarkable. If you lend the author your time for this book he will reward you abundantly. Sojourner Songs Poems Ben T Palpant 9780996038973 Books Reviews
It has been a delight to explore Sojourner Songs and share it's beauty and truth with others. I resonated with the note to the reader when Palpant said, "I dodged poetry and sympathized with those who found poetry ornery, peculiar, unwilling to confess its meaning in a clear simple formula, even under the most grueling interrogation." I have wanted to like poetry, but felt silly when unable to figure it out, so I found encouragement on the next page when he wrote, "He reminded me that poetry is not a riddle to be solved, but a rendering of gravity, grace, and beauty that lends courage to strangers" and "I have discovered rather late in life that poetry is a necessity, like our need to be touched." Well, if you struggle with poetry or are second guessing picking up this book, I encourage you to take the chance and allow yourself to be touched in a special way by these heartfelt poems. Some of my favorites were Julie, Fly-Fishing on the St. Joe, Come, Sit, Eat, This Is Me, Finally and so many others. If you are in need of refreshment, do not hesitate to get a copy and I am confident you will go back for more to share with others!
John Donne wrote, "Affliction is a treasure, and scarce any man hath enough of it." An unexpected confirmation of the lasting nature of Sojourner Songs came when we were going through an emergency ourselves, and I had a sudden strange wish to have this book of poems with me to reread in the few small moments of down time.
That is a testament to the darker night poems, but his daytime writing has some memorably bright (although occasionally bittersweet) poems as well. These two Billy Collins-esque lines stuck with me "Peel back the layers / of my onion heart, / and we will both weep." And, "[The morning is] / Like a kiss, / an unmistakable doorway / into promise."
This book explores the Christian pilgrimage through poetry. Most of the poems are based on a portion of Scripture. However, there are times when the Scripture text and the poem do not seem to be very related. Others are precise. While at times a bit too existentialist, overall the book is phenomenal. Palpant's expressive vocabulary and appropriate pace bring the reader into the exact mood of his experience. You know and feel what you are reading. Recommended for everyone.
My favorites include

I am young. I am not mature in my insights of poetry. Things do not captivate me as much as they do adults, but I can say one thing, this book captivated me in ways I had no idea existed. It compelled me to think deeper and to feel greater about the beauty of this world. It was emotionally moving, leaving me with tears streaming down my face one minute, and the next minute with a grin from cheek to cheek. This book, this GEM, is 110% worth the read. No matter what age or state, there is something relatable to all. I think that, right there, is what makes this book a once in a lifetime find. It is hard enough to write a book so universally relatable but to write something that spews beauty and honesty and humility and most importantly God's glory from every page is most definitely a feat, but Mr.Palpant truly succeeded this daunting task so gracefully. I am telling you, I SOAKED THIS BOOK IN LIKE A SPONGE! From cover to cover, I was continually under my breath, saying over and over again, a quick little amen because I saw what heartache is, and what true satisfaction in the Lord looks like, but overall I saw the bright light of Truth. As I continued to turn page after page, eager to see what is new on the other side, the saddest sight of all, the empty white book cover awaited me. This book was so enchanting that I hadn't even realized the end of the book had so quickly approached me! Buy this book! HECK! invest in the hard back! Go on this journey and see what it is to be a sojourner of this world trying to find the way to the kingdom ahead!
do enjoy poetry. My few attempts to write it have not gone particularly well, but I have often benefited from reading and memorizing the work of real poets. Poetry has the ability to convey feelings and emotions in a way prose does not. Both genres communicate truth, but poetry has its way of being quicker to reach the emotions. I enjoy that at times. I need that at times.
Most of the poetry I enjoy is the kind you find in anthologies and there have been only a few occasions where I have found and enjoyed contemporary work. I recently received a copy of Ben Palpant’s new collection Sojourner Songs and found it thoroughly enjoyable and, at times, deeply moving. Palpant “discovered late in life that poetry is a necessity, like our need to be touched” and learned this only through a period of deep physical suffering. His poetry flowed out of his experiences and helped bring sense to it. He has collected the best of his work into this volume which he structures around the traditional liturgical hours Evening is for recalling the works of God and assessing the present, nightfall for considering the darkness to come, the night watches for the despair of suffering, and sunrise for the hope that comes with each new day. Each section is markedly different from the others and each contains some powerful poems. I highly recommend buying the book and enjoying his work yourself...
I really disliked the dark imagery and themes
Absolutely loved this collection of poems. At once personal and universal, I come back to it regularly.
